Erectile dysfunction
(ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient
for sexual intercourse. Symptoms related to erectile dysfunction
may include:
• Trouble getting an erection • Trouble keeping an erection • Reduced sexual
desire
Problems with erections most commonly stem from diminished
blood flow to the small blood vessels within the penis. Associated
risk factors include heart disease, hypertension, elevated cholesterol,
diabetes and smoking. Among other potential contributing factors
are hormonal changes, medications and chronic illnesses. Lifestyle
changes, medications, and other treatments are often used to treat
ED.
When a man has ED, certain tests can
be performed to identify the possible causes and determine the
severity of his condition. These include blood tests and ultrasound
circulation (blood flow) scanning.
Oral medications (eg. Viagra,
Levitra, or Cialis) are generally the first option for most men.
If these do not provide a satisfactory solution, other specialized
medications are available.
Some men opt for an effective solution
known as a penile prosthesis. Physicians at Lawrenceville Urology
are experts at this procedure.
