In about
half the cases when couples are unable to conceive after a year
of trying, male infertility is a factor. Male infertility results
from abnormal sperm production, function, or impaired delivery
of sperm. The most common cause of male infertility is a varicocele.
This is abnormal dilation of veins draining the testicles which
impair the development of sperm. Other factors include general
health and lifestyle issues, and exposure to certain environmental
conditions.
A number of tests and treatment options make it possible
to diagnose and overcome most causes of male infertility.
